The story, in brief
The Chirattakonam account begins with three dots reportedly noticed in a host during adoration, then a face-like image days later. The exhibition panel attributes the observations to Father Johnson Karoor. The official Syro-Malankara directory independently confirms his tenure at the exact parish, but does not authenticate the reported image. [CHI-01; CHI-03]
A specific parish and pastor
The curial directory places Johnson Karoor at St. Mary’s from 1998 to 2007. [CHI-01]
A reported visual sequence
The exhibition describes observations on 28 April and 5 May 2001. [CHI-03]

From three dots to a perceived face
The exhibition’s attributed pastor statement says adoration began on 28 April 2001 during the annual Saint Jude novena. Three dots were noticed, and the host was later reposed. On 5 May, the pastor reportedly saw a human face-like figure and asked others what they observed. This is the chronology presented in the panel; the original signed deposition was not inspected. [CHI-03]
Why the image was read as Christ
Catholic Eucharistic faith holds that Christ is truly present even when the senses perceive ordinary bread. A perceived face would therefore be interpreted by believers as an additional visual sign of a presence already believed. The image would not create that presence or make other consecrated hosts less real. [EX-01]
The exhibition connects the prayer setting with the Gospel episode of Thomas encountering the risen Jesus. That supplied a religious frame for interpreting the reported image. A meaningful scriptural association, however, is not itself an image-analysis result. [CHI-03; EX-01]
The photographed claim
The attributed statement says a photographer was summoned and the resulting photographs appeared increasingly clear. The panel reproduces images, but not original files, camera settings, exposure comparisons, or a controlled sequence. A reproduced photograph can show what was circulated; it cannot alone establish whether changes belonged to the object, lighting, reproduction, or perception. [CHI-03]
What the curial directory actually corroborates
The official directory identifies the parish and the pastor’s tenure covering 2001. That independently anchors the institutional setting. It says nothing about the host, a photograph series, sampling, an inquiry, current custody, or a decree. Corroborating a person’s office is useful, but should not be stretched into corroborating every statement attributed to that person. [CHI-01]
A quotation attributed to an archbishop
The panel attributes a devotional response to Cyril Mar Baselios. The original signed statement and its complete context were not inspected. Its reported meaning concerns a sign calling believers to respond to what they already believe. It should not be converted into a formal archiepiscopal finding of supernatural origin. [CHI-03]
The parish’s continuing life is a different fact
A community-run Syro-Malankara news portal reports the renovated church’s consecration in 2025. That supports the exact church’s ongoing use alongside the official directory. The portal is not an official curial publication, and the report does not mention the 2001 host. A functioning parish cannot stand in for missing object custody records. [CHI-01; CHI-02]
What a fuller visual investigation would need
Original photographs, dated handling records, independent descriptions before interpretation was suggested, and a current object inventory would materially improve the case. Image or material studies would then need to address actual formation processes. The available record supports a reported visual phenomenon associated with an identifiable parish, while its cause and institutional judgment remain unresolved. [CHI-01; CHI-03]

Questions people ask
Open any question for a fuller answer and its sources.
Is this Vilakkannur’s 2013 case?
Does the official directory mention the miracle?
No. It corroborates the parish and pastor history, not the event or object. [CHI-01]
Are the published photographs original forensic records?
The inspected material is an exhibition reproduction. Original image files and a documented analytical sequence were not available. [CHI-03]
Was an archbishop’s formal decree inspected?
No. The panel attributes a statement to Cyril Mar Baselios, but an authenticated original and formal event-specific decree were not located. [CHI-03]
What the evidence can establish
Evidence verdict: unresolved
What can current official and secondary sources establish about the face-like image reportedly observed in a host at St. Mary's, Chirattakonam, in 2001?
The official Syro-Malankara curial directory confirms the exact parish, its establishment, and Johnson Karoor's 1998–2007 tenure as vicar. Secondary exhibition material attributes the 2001 observation and photographs to him and quotes Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios. No current official inquiry, decree, custody inventory, original image-forensics record, or material examination was located, so the event and claimed face remain unresolved.
